School in a Bag (SIAB) is a UK-based educational charity that provides SchoolBags filled with essential learning materials to disadvantaged, disaster-affected and displaced children around the world.
A SchoolBag is a simple but effective solution, containing resources that enable a child to write, draw, calculate, express themselves, eat, drink, and learn with dignity. A typical SchoolBag includes pencils, biros, colouring pencils, a maths set, ruler, pencil case, six exercise books, a water bottle, lunch box or geometry box which ever is greater need, and a hygiene kit containing a nail cutter, hair comb, soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste etc.
HELP’s founder, Jimmy, was introduced to Luke Simon, founder of School in a Bag UK, through a mutual contact. Jimmy later met Luke in England while studying at the University of Sussex, which led to the establishment of the School in a Bag programme in Nepal.
Since 2012, HELP has worked in partnership with SIAB to deliver SchoolBags across Nepal using an in-country delivery model. SIAB provides the funding, while all SchoolBags and their contents are sourced and assembled locally in Nepal. This approach supports the local economy and maximises impact by avoiding international shipping costs.
SIAB focuses on children affected by poverty, natural disasters, food insecurity, and conflict. Each red SchoolBag helps children attend school regularly, learn with confidence, and feel included. For many children, receiving a SchoolBag is more than practical support. It provides motivation, dignity, and pride in going to school.
In rural Nepal, many children are unable to attend school consistently because their families cannot afford basic learning materials. Poverty, natural disasters, and limited access to resources continue to place education out of reach for the most vulnerable children.
School in a Bag provides a simple, cost-effective solution by equipping children with essential school supplies. This support improves attendance, strengthens classroom participation, and reduces dropout rates. The programme delivers measurable impact while directly contributing to SDG 4: Quality Education, helping ensure inclusive and equitable learning opportunities.
The School in a Bag programme began in Nepal in 2012, with the distribution of 1,000 SchoolBags across 10 schools in Sindhupalchowk District. Since then, the programme has expanded steadily to reach some of the country’s most remote communities.
To date, SIAB has supported 25,670 children across 222 schools in 22 districts of Nepal. Sindhupalchowk remains a core focus area, with more than 15,000 children supported across 150 schools.
To ensure no child is excluded due to geography, SchoolBags are delivered using locally appropriate methods, including transport by donkey, to reach hard-to-reach mountainous areas.
Schools submit a formal request outlining their needs and the number of students requiring support.
Since its launch in Nepal, the School in a Bag programme has supported thousands of children across remote and underserved communities.
